The Spirit Lives Expedition

To honour and demonstrate the resilient ANZAC Spirit

The Spirit Lives Antarctic Expedition will see a team of service and ex-serving Australian and New Zealand Defence Force members conduct a 1500 km human-powered expedition in Antarctica, beginning in November 2019. The Expeditoin is named to honour the enduring ANZAC Spirit founded on mateship, courage, and endurance that draws our team together.

We’ll cover this distance using human-power alone, pulling sledges while battling temperatures down to -50°C , and wind speeds of over 90 km/h.

Our team is bound together by an expeditionary spirit to cross Antarctica and a unified purpose to:

Raise awareness of the impact of military service on the mental, physical and social health of transitioned veterans and the need for collaborative, focussed and consistent effort to build knowledge through research that can be turned into viable treatments for veterans.

We will achieve this through:

  • Sharing our military and expedition experiences to inspire people to get outdoors with their mates, conduct adventurous activities and enhance their wellbeing.

  • Raising money for Wounded Heroes Australia and the Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation to conduct a research project into the benefits of adventurous and outdoor activities for veteran wellbeing, rehabilitation and reintegration.

  • Building knowledge of polar environments, human performance, and leadership to share with future generations to help them understand, explore, and respect our environment.
